Website news40-year lifetime for PV installations a reality
26 February 2024Since its founding in 2015, Solarport has grown to become one of the largest suppliers of structural components for solar farms in the United Kingdom. During 2023, the company began to utilise Magnelis® ZM800 from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products in the manufacturing of components for ground-mounted solar arrays. The heavier coating – 65 µm on each side of an S450GD-HyPer® substrate – enables Solarport to offer expected lifetimes of up to 40 years to solar farm operators. This is a crucial differentiator as investors become more aware of corrosion resistance. Although Magnelis® ZM800 only became commercially available in 2023, Solarport has already deployed it in several solar farms across the UK.

Solar
Generating, storing, and having solar electricity at our disposal is one the most difficult challenges of this century.
Useful information
MoreThere are two ways of converting solar power into electricity. Either directly, by using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly, using concentrated solar power (CSP). The market has developed two different solar generation systems:
- Ground-mounted systems
- Building systems for roofing (residential and semi-industrial)
Magnelis®
Magnelis® supports efforts to generate clean and renewable energy by offering advanced corrosion protection for solar installations. Magnelis® is the preferred coating solution for both concentrated solar power (CSP) farms and ground-mounted structural solutions for photovoltaic (PV) solar farms. It offers increased durability and the best possible protection against corrosion and abrasion.
Magnelis® extends the life of solar structures so operators can maximise the return on their investment.
The features listed below are key advantages of these applications:
- Guaranteed durability up to 25 years
- Improved resistance against abrasion
- Effective resistance against corrosion, even when placed in soil
- Wide range both in thickness and steel grade, including high strength steel grades beyond European standard performances
- Cost effective
- Quick installation
- Reduced environmental impact
ArcelorMittal is committed to offering best in class solutions for solar energy production.
