- ArcelorMittal's best in class product for corrosion resistance is Magnelis® metallic coated steel. It is THE solution to corrosion in the harshest environment, even for deformed parts. The specific composition of Magnelis® (3% Mg and 3.5% Al) is the key element which ensures a stable and durable layer across the entire surface and self-healing characteristics for edges, scratches, and perforations.
- Indaten® for flat products and Arcorox® for sections are weathering steels developed by ArcelorMittal. Weathering steels are well known as corrosion resistant steels thanks to the addition of copper during manufacturing. Corrosion resistance can be improved even further by using phosphorous with the exception of the structural heavy plate to avoid iron phosphide (FeP3).
- Granite® HDXtreme, Granite® Storm, & Solano® Nature organic coated steels have excellent corrosion resistance up to RC5 and are ideal for external usage in severe environments for components such as profiles and sandwich panels for roofing and cladding. They are also suitable for roofing applications such as tiles, guttering, and rainwater systems.
- Sheet piles can be delivered with a specific coating adapted to marine environment and soil conditions.

Product NewsMagnelis® is helping to fuel Eastern Europe's increase in renewable energy
23 February 2021Government incentives and lower infrastructure costs are driving the boom in solar energy across Eastern Europe. Magnelis®, from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, is increasing the attractiveness of solar for investors as it extends the lifespan of solar farms. Two of Poland’s largest manufacturers of photovoltaic support systems are Energy5 and Corab. Both use Magnelis® to create long-lasting solar farms which will generate clean energy for decades to come. In solar farm applications, ArcelorMittal offers long-term guarantees on Magnelis® of up to 25 years. This ensures that new solar farms will provide an adequate return on the investment over their lifetime. Both Corab and Energy5 are using the advantages of Magnelis® to move beyond Poland and explore opportunities in nearby countries, and even further afield.

Product NewsTaking car parks to the next level with Magnelis®
27 October 2020Demand for convenient car parking is rising dramatically. However, the land available for parking is severely limited in many locations. This is making multi-storey car parks a very attractive option in city centres, near transport hubs, and at public buildings such as hospitals. To meet this demand in a cost-effective way, Kingspan, a leading building materials company, has developed a complete portfolio of solutions for car park builders. A key element is Magnelis® from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products which Kingspan uses to form the deck of each level in the car park. As well as cost-effective forming and quick assembly, Magnelis® offers long-term protection against corrosion to ensure the safety and viability of parking structures.

Corrosion resistance
ArcelorMittal Europe has extensive experience and knowledge of developing and offering best in class products and solutions for corrosion resistant steels in the harshest environments.
Corrosion is an electrochemical process where an electrochemical cell is created consisting of an anode, which is depleted to the benefit of a cathode. In practice, cells are formed as soon as a lack of surface uniformity appears creating anode and cathode areas whereby water acts as the electrolyte. In these cells, the steel will corrode each time it becomes the anode, but when it is the cathode, it will remain intact. Corrosion phenomena occur under the action of a corrosive medium and finally lead to erosion of the material.
When it comes to steel, the result may be the visible corrosion product known as rust, which may cause deterioration of the external appearance, and finally, lead to the loss of performance capacity of steel members as well as damage other components.

The risk of corrosion depends on the environment in which a material is utilised. The corrosion risks of different ambient conditions have been classified in the ISO EN 12994 standard. The classifications start at C1 (non-aggressive environment) and go up to C5 (most aggressive). Distinctions are made between indoor and outdoor environments.
