SEGRO Park Frechen: An industrial park sets a benchmark in sustainable construction with ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® steel

The first phase of the new SEGRO Park Frechen in Germany was successfully completed by the end of 2024. The entire building envelope of this light industrial park at the gates of Cologne was fabricated with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel and aims to achieve DGNB Platinum certification.

Sustainable construction & CO₂ reduction

Over 30 800 square metres of flexible rental space are being developed in two phases, with CO₂ reduction as a top priority.

With sustainability features such as energy standard BEG40, green roofs, facade greenings, photovoltaic systems, and charging stations for EVs being utilised in this project, SEGRO is clearly demonstrating its dedication to reducing carbon emissions through collaboration, sustainable building practices, and CO₂-reduced construction materials.

SEGRO has been working with the executing general contractor, GOLDBECK, from the very start of the project to ensure sustainable practices were present from the design phase. The project aims to achieve DGNB Platinum certification, reflecting a dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable building practices.

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for the entire building envelope

An important element in this undertaking was GOLDBECK's selection of ArcelorMittal Building Solutions’ building elements made with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for roofing and cladding – materials that support CO₂ reduction, aligning with GOLDBECK's best practices.

Produced via the Electric Arc Furnace route, XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel utilises high levels of scrap steel and 100% renewable electricity, resulting in high-quality steel with a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to a standard solution.

ArcelorMittal Building Solutions delivers XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel in various thicknesses, utilising its expertise in roll-forming practices and in-house coil rolling and coating lines. This flexibility optimises material use, minimising environmental impact while maintaining structural integrity.

A significant CO₂ reduction with ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® steel

For SEGRO Park Frechen’s 13 300-metre-square first phase, the sustainable design includes 5100m² of ArcelorMittal Building Solutions’ Ondatherm® 1003 MG panels for the facade and 229 tonnes of its trapezoidal steel sheets 200/420 for the long-span roof decking. Both products were made using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel. The materials were delivered in stages to align with construction progress, ensuring regular construction sequences were maintained.

An impressive 275 tonnes of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel were used, resulting in a significant CO₂ reduction of approximately 542 000 kg based on published EPDs. This means that almost 2000 kg of CO₂ were saved per tonne of produced steel.

Collaboration and innovation driving sustainable industrial design

SEGRO Park Frechen demonstrates the potential of innovative industrial design and sustainable construction. This project not only satisfies strict environmental responsibility but also has a lower carbon footprint for the entire building envelope and the highest DGNB certification thanks to the use of low emission steel for building elements from ArcelorMittal Building Solutions.
