Mountpark Illescas: Granite® helps logistics centre achieve Excellent BREEAM rating

The Mountpark Illescas logistics centre provides over 85 000 square metres of warehouse and office space. Located just 35 kilometres from Madrid, Spain, the new facility offers more than 130 docks for the loading, unloading, and storage of cargo destined for the Iberian Peninsula and beyond. The building utilises over 15 000 square metres of facade sandwich panels made with Granite®, an organic coated steel produced by ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The facade sandwich panels were manufactured by Huurre Ibérica, a part of the Kingspan Group and a leading supplier of insulating panels and high-value construction systems.

Granite® helps attain Excellent BREEAM rating and customer satisfaction

Huurre Ibérica proposed the use of Granite® to its customer as it fitted well with the building owner’s goals. “One of the big influencing factors was the automatic ten-year guarantee offered by ArcelorMittal on Granite®,” explains Albert Puig, specification manager for Kingspan Southern Europe. “The building’s owner was also aiming for an Excellent BREEAM rating for the structure and Granite® helped them to achieve that.”

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment methods for infrastructure and buildings. A good BREEAM score indicates that the structure is a sustainable environment that protects natural resources and enhances the well-being of the people who utilise it. The environmental compatibility of building products is particularly important to achieving a high BREEAM rating. As they can be fully reused or recycled at the end of their life, steel components achieve good BREEAM credits and have a positive impact on the building’s overall BREEAM score.

“Some Granite® coatings offer a high degree of reflectivity. This helps to ensure the thermal comfort of a building and contributes to higher BREEAM credits,” says Albert Puig. “Moreover, if the steel is produced within 800 kilometres of the site where it is used, this will influence your BREEAM score as well.”

The wide palette of the Granite® range also enabled the building's owner to choose their corporate colours for the exterior: squirrel grey (RAL 7000), light grey (RAL 7035), and sapphire blue (RAL 5003).

“Quality guaranteed”

What was the biggest advantage of working with ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products? “Quality, guaranteed,” says Albert Puig. “That meant we could achieve the guarantee the customer wanted and provide a cost-effective solution that was delivered on time and within budget.”

“As well as answering questions from our customer – the installer – Huurre also had to respond to queries from the building's owner,” says Albert Puig. “These concerned details such as the steel used, the coatings, guarantees, and statistical calculations for the sandwich panels. ArcelorMittal’s help and documentation was very important.”
