XCarb™ towards carbon neutral steel
Decarbonising ArcelorMittal’s Spanish operations21 July 2021
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on 13 July 2021 between ArcelorMittal and the Spanish government demonstrates mutual intent to work together towards a decarbonised Spanish economy – a necessity for industries such as steel to successfully transition to carbon neutrality. As a result, new manufacturing processes at ArcelorMittal’s Spanish operations will include a new direct reduced iron (DRI) unit and electric arc furnace (EAF) installation in Gijón that will reduce carbon emissions at ArcelorMittal’s Spanish operations by approximately 50%. The DRI installation in Gijón will also enable ArcelorMittal Sestao to become the world’s first full-scale zero carbon emissions* steel plant.Corporate News

Introducing ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ green steel certificates
XCarb™ is the new brand name for ArcelorMittal’s ongoing global programme of steelmaking innovation targeted at carbon neutral steel by 2050. The initiatives that are part of XCarb™ aim to reduce ArcelorMittal’s carbon footprint.
The XCarb™ green steel certificate initiative
One of the first initiatives is XCarb™ green steel certificates from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The certificates are issued by ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products and are based on CO2 savings which have been assured by DNV, an independent body. The savings are calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for Project Accounting.
Purchasing an XCarb™ green steel certificate officially passes the CO2 savings achieved by ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products to our customer. This enables the customer to report a corresponding reduction in their Scope 3 CO2 emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
