ArcelorMittal rails improve connectivity in Mexico

ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products contributed to two major transportation projects in Mexico aiming to improve connectivity by supplying 115RE AREMA standard rails and 33C1 guard rails from its mills in Gijón, Spain and Królewska, Poland.

Shorter travel times between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean

The La Mata – Colonia Jordan section is part of the Tehuantepec Isthmus Railway, the interoceanic rail line that will cross the Tehuantepec isthmus, the country's narrowest stretch between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.

The works for the La Mata – Colonia Jordan section, developed by the Spanish company COMSA, consist of the rehabilitation of 33.5 km of tracks, including the complete replacement of the superstructure.

ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products Rails & Special Sections participated in the project and supplied 115RE R8 AREMA standard rails of Low Alloy Intermediate Strength (IH) at 80ft long to customers COMSA México and CONSORCIO FERROVIARIO FIT.

The modernisation of this 132-kilometre section of railroad will help to reduce travel times, increase train speed, reduce costs, and diversify the line by enabling the transfer of cargo and passengers.

 

Reducing the journey times of 130 000 users by 40%

The second project involves the comprehensive renovation of a 7-kilometre section of double track on light rail line that serves the southern part of Mexico City.

ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products Rails & Special Sections participated in the project and supplied COMSA México with:

  • 115RE R8 Intermediate Strength Steel grade 80ft rails in AREMA 2016 standard.
  • 115RE R8 Carbon Rail High Strength (HH) 18m rails.
  • 33C1 guard rails in 12m length.

The section between the Azteca Station and Xochimilco (locally known as el Tren Ligero de la Ciudad de México) will be renovated to restore the operational and safety capacity of the light rail line and to rehabilitate the platform and the drainage system, among other actions.

The light train came into operation at the beginning of the 2021, reducing the journey time between the two stations by 40%, and is expected to serve 130 000 users.
