What do ArcelorMittal Europe’s partners have to say about XCarb® green steel certificates?

Ateliers 3S is proud to benefit from XCarb® green steel certificates
“Ateliers 3S is proud to be the first customer to benefit from ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® green steel certificates. Design and innovation in building with steel have been the key pillars of the first decade of our business. Today, the environment and sustainable development are at the heart of Ateliers 3S’ concerns. The XCarb® green steel certificate allows us to report a reduction in our Scope 3 CO2 emissions, something that has never been seen in our sector. They represent an important step forward on Ateliers 3S’ road to carbon neutrality.” (Julien Faisandier, CEO of Ateliers 3S, and Jean Christophe Vigouroux, owner of Ateliers 3S.)

A culture of responsibility sees BILKA purchase XCarb® green steel certificates
ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® green steel certificates will allow BILKA to report an equivalent reduction in its Scope 3 emissions, in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. “We will pass those CO2 savings onto our customers and to the end user. The XCarb® green steel certificates will help us achieve our target of reducing CO2 emissions and provide a big competitive advantage for the business.” (Horatiu Tepes, owner and CEO of BILKA.)

XCarb®: ArcelorMittal Europe and partners move together towards carbon neutrality

XCarb®, launched in March 2021, is a historic step in ArcelorMittal Europe’s decarbonisation strategy. XCarb® will ultimately bring together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low, and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects, into a single effort focussed on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon-neutral steel. The wheels in motion to accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral steelmaking are not just churning internally – ArcelorMittal Europe’s many partners are a valuable part of this ambitious plan.

XCarb® green steel certificates: an integral element

For ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products’ customers, XCarb® green steel certificates are an integral element of XCarb®. The certificates help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions, the indirect emissions from sources outside a company’s control.

According to ArcelorMittal Europe CEO Geert Van Poelvoorde, “the reception since the launch has been very positive, with customers buying green steel certificates from a range of countries and industries. I am very proud of the work done by the many teams involved in developing the technology and running the installations that are already contributing to reduced CO2 emissions which, in turn, are translated into green steel certificates that customers can buy alongside their order of physical steel.”

In 2021, approximately 120 000 tonnes of certificates will be available. The initial CO2 savings will be achieved using proven technologies such as replacing the use of coal with the injection of hydrogen-rich gases into the blast furnace.

Further state-of-the-art projects, such as the Carbalyst® project in Ghent that will capture waste gases and biologically convert them into recycled carbon ethanol, are under construction. These projects will allow for more and more green steel certificates to become available. It is expected that 600 000 tonnes worth of green steel certificates will be obtainable in 2022.
