XCarb® helps FEAG achieve its sustainability goals

FEAG, a leading supplier of electrical components for the energy sector, is undertaking a growth and transformation process which will enable the business to manage future opportunities and challenges. A key step in this journey has been the purchase of XCarb® Green steel certificates from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The steel accompanying the certificates is an essential component in FEAG’s compact transformer stations which are used in the renewable energy sector.

XCarb® Green steel certificates help reduce FEAG customers' emissions

FEAG will save more than 2000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions by purchasing 1000 tonnes of steel with XCarb® Green steel certificates. The XCarb® certificates will enable the FEAG Group to significantly reduce its own Scope 3 emissions and those of its customers. Scope 3 emissions refer to indirect emissions outside the control of companies, including from purchased goods.

The XCarb® Green steel certificates are based on real CO2 savings achieved through these practical activities, as well as wider initiatives which reduce ArcelorMittal’s carbon footprint and projects aimed at green innovation. The savings are independently assured by DNV GL.

“Steel is a key component for FEAG and used in most of our products,” says Dr Karsten Wünsche, CEO of FEAG’s Sankt Ingbert facility. “As part of our business transformation, we want to offer products that will help our customers to reduce their emissions. ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® Green steel certificates give us that opportunity.”

FEAG increases transparency and awareness

The growth and transformation process FEAG has embarked on has already increased transparency and internal awareness of the company’s sustainability programme. “In a second step, further initiatives are being introduced to reduce energy consumption and offset emissions,” says Carsten Margardt, business unit manager for procurement and logistics at FEAG. “The third step is to help our customers become more sustainable by offering products which reduce or control their emissions. It’s here that ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® Green steel certificates will help us to start conversations with customers about sustainability and enhance the viability of the renewable energy sector.”

FEAG utilises a range of cold rolled steels from ArcelorMittal, including electro-galvanised and hot dip galvanised material. “FEAG have recently introduced Jetskin®,” notes Tina Chmura, sales manager at ArcelorMittal Downstream Solutions in Edenkoben. “Jetskin® is a zinc coating which is applied using Jet Vapor Deposition (JVD) technology. As well as providing homogeneous corrosion protection for the steel, Jetskin® minimises the amount of zinc required and cuts carbon emissions compared to conventional galvanised products.”

FEAG will use Jetskin® to make a wide range of housings for switchgears, substations, and compact transformer stations. “We plan to increase our use of more sustainable materials such as Jetskin®,” notes Dr Karsten Wünsche. “This will enable us to move away from electro-galvanised and hot dip galvanised steels.”

“FEAG is proud to have acquired ArcelorMittal steel with XCarb® certificates,” says Carsten Margardt. “They will make an important contribution to our efforts to reduce indirect CO2 emissions and generate sustainable added value. And they will also add value for our customers.”

“FEAG is the first customer that ArcelorMittal Downstream Solutions – Steel Service Center Edenkoben has provided with XCarb® Green steel certificates,” says Tina Chmura. “We will deliver the steel to the customer during the course of 2022.”
