Metal Union

Metal Union, a long-term ArcelorMittal customer based in Poland, worked closely with ArcelorMittal’s R&D team to develop their award-winning window frame application with Jetskin® from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. In 2019, Metal Union received the prestigious ‘VIP Stolarka’ award for innovation at the 24th VIP Window and Door Producers Meeting.

A close partnership

Metal Union worked closely with ArcelorMittal to develop their new window frame. Metal Union and ArcelorMittal both highly value the development of new technical solutions. As such, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team in Ghent developed an innovative passivation technique for the window application that provides good adhesion between the glass and the steel frame.

A modern profiling company

Metal Union is a modern profiling company with extensive production facilities utilising advanced, innovative technology. One of their major advantages is their ability to adapt quickly to the individual requirements of clients.

As well as window frames, Metal Union also produces thin-walled profiles made of steel strips. They offer services such as spatial bending of wire and cutting and taping of steel strips and profiles. The company exports around 65 percent of their products to European and eastern countries.

Why Jetskin® from ArcelorMittal?

Jetskin® is produced in a process known as Jet Vapour Deposition (JVD) that uses a vacuum chamber to coat one or both sides of a steel substrate with a fine layer of zinc.

Before turning to ArcelorMittal’s metallic coating, Metal Union used galvanised steel but found that it could reflect light, disrupting the visual appearance of the window. Metal Union prefer Jetskin® coating as it is extremely homogeneous on the inter-pane and matches the colour of the overall window frame, in addition to providing excellent protection against corrosion.

The resulting frames are very rigid and have better thermal performance than aluminium solutions. Jetskin® improves the performance of the window as the steel has a similar linear expansion coefficient to the glass. This eliminates stress on the edges of the insulating glass panels.

Metal Union found that Jetskin® makes their manufacturing process more efficient. Compared to hot dip galvanised steel that they previously used for profile production, using Jetskin® requires less energy and lubricants during the production process. Less lubrication results in a decrease of the cleaning agents and preservatives that Metal Union use for their profiling tools.

Additionally, Jetskin® radically decreases the amount of water vapour that can form around the edges of a window, which can eliminate any harmful fungi or mould that may be produced by the surrounding environment.
