Heavy plates with a 65% lower carbon footprint

“With this EPD, steel users can formally assess the environmental profile of the products they use. This new EPD meets the EN 15804 European standard and showcases that our heavy plate guarantees a CO2 footprint that is around 65 per cent lower than the same product made via the conventional steelmaking route,” notes Denis Parein, Commercial head of heavy plate for ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. “As well as meeting growing customer demand, it also addresses the legitimate concerns of local authorities and end users who want to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of projects related to the energy transition and construction.”

Using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates brings many advantages

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates are produced from slabs made in an electric arc furnace (EAF) using almost 100% scrap and 100% renewable electricity. ArcelorMittal is the first steelmaker in Europe that can offer such low-carbon emissions heavy plates with a unit weight of up to 18 tonnes.

Heavy plates have a wide range of applications in markets such as wind energy, shipbuilding, bridges and civil engineering, pressure vessels, and line pipe for the transportation of energy, such as hydrogen, oil, and gas. Using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates in these applications enables ArcelorMittal’s customers to significantly reduce their Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions.

The Yeu and Noirmoutier wind farm, currently being built in the Vendée region of France, involves the construction and installation of a wind farm aiming to supply nearly 800 000 people with electricity each year. Industeel, an ArcelorMittal Downstream Solutions business division, is contributing to the project by supplying ingot produced in Le Creusot mill.

Yeu and Noirmoutier offshore wind farm

The Yeu and Noirmoutier wind farm involves the construction and installation of an offshore wind farm located 11 km off the island of Yeu and 16 km off the island of Noirmoutier. With a total capacity of around 500 MW, once completed the offshore wind farm will supply nearly 800 000 people with electricity each year, the equivalent of the population of the Vendée region.

The project is owned by Ocean Winds, ENGIE's joint venture with EDP Renewables dedicated to offshore wind, with partners Sumitomo Corporation and Banque des Territoires and Vendée Energie.

Low-carbon and low-hydrogen steel

Industeel provided 3300 tonnes of smooth and flexible weight ingots in grade S355G10 with a diameter of 1255 mm to produce the connection rings used in the project. The steel was produced with Industeel's electrical arc furnace located in Le Creusot, France.

Our 20-year partnership with the customer and our low-carbon and low-hydrogen steel grade were two key factors in winning this contract, and ArcelorMittal is proud to contribute to this renewable energy development project.

The first offshore operations took place in the summer of 2023 before the actual start of the installation works in 2024 and 2025. The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2025.

Yeu and Noirmoutier wind farm

TTV (Thickness Toughness Validator) is a tool developed internally by ArcelorMittal Steligence® Engineering. It is a simple tool for validating the selection of toughness subgrades according to the recommendations and requirements of the EN 1993-1-10 standard. This standard provides design guidance for the selection of steel for fracture toughness, imposing maximum detail thicknesses depending on material, temperature, and load level. The simplified method (EN 1993-1-10, Clause 2.3) is based on a simple table check. As it is general, it is based on safe assumptions that may not always correspond to specific project specifications. The advanced method (EN 1993-1-10, Clause 2.4), based on more advanced fracture mechanics methods, has therefore been implemented in order to perform a more specific check to deliver more advanced results. This tool is entirely based on Eurocode background methods and their application. As such, the advanced method will deliver the same results as the tables of the simplified method if the same assumptions are introduced. The user guide and validation examples are provided in the tool’s download folder.

The aim of this tool is to disseminate structural design knowledge and techniques for a subject that is often less known to designers. With TTV, the process of verifying steel details according to toughness requirements will be easier and will speed up workflow. Moreover, TTV includes advanced methods permitted by design standards, giving the user additional choices for verification methods.
