Education wrapped in steel
17 May 2022Education escorts us throughout our entire lives – as do the buildings in which we acquire our knowledge and skills. We recollect their architecture, interior design, pieces of furniture, and even their smells. Some have impressed us more than others, but none of them have left us indifferent. In our memories, these buildings are profoundly connected to our experiences and emotions, including the people we connected with there.Over the last few decades, education has evolved and so have the requirements for educational buildings. Architectural design has significantly increased in importance, technology has conquered interior design, and user comfort is a key concern, all of which are important factors accompanying the learning experience. Architecturally attractive buildings not only express the prestige and status of institutions but contribute to a sense of wellbeing for their users.

Education escorts us throughout our entire lives – as do the buildings in which we acquire our knowledge and skills. We recollect their architecture, interior design, pieces of furniture, and even their smells. Some have impressed us more than others, but none of them have left us indifferent. In our memories, these buildings are profoundly connected to our experiences and emotions, including the people we connected with there.
Over the last few decades, education has evolved and so have the requirements for educational buildings. Architectural design has significantly increased in importance, technology has conquered interior design, and user comfort is a key concern, all of which are important factors accompanying the learning experience. Architecturally attractive buildings not only express the prestige and status of institutions but contribute to a sense of wellbeing for their users.
We invite you to explore a sampling of our Constructalia case studies about educational buildings in which steel plays an important role. Be it in their structural systems, facades, or roofing, find out how steel contributes to the aesthetics, functionality, and safety of these buildings whilst keeping cost and sustainability concerns in mind.
Experimental construction at the service of science
Seemingly floating over the ground with its gentle slopes and internal patios, the educational experience at the Rolex Learning Center on the campus of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland must be one of a kind. Who wouldn't like to discover its innovative learning labs, libraries, and student mingling spaces? While we cannot take you there, our case study can offer you a glimpse.
It takes a village…
At Vista College, formerly known as Arcus College, hundreds of students receive vocational education at different levels, preparing them for the ever-changing professional world. At its campus in Herleen in the Netherlands, six steel-clad, organic shaped buildings are connected on their ground floors below street level and arranged around two patios, resulting in an environment that encourages openness, flexibility, and exchange.
Ecological intelligence transformed into a building
Stoas Vilentum University of Applied Science, now called Aeres Hogeschool, focusses on research and teaching in the fields of agriculture and ecology. With a durable steel facade, its university building in Wageningen in the Netherlands was also featured as Constructalia case study a few years back. Learn about its 'ecologically intelligent' design that was conceived in close cooperation with its future users.
An all-in-one primary education project
Wouldn’t you like to acquire skills and knowledge at a school that combines education, handicrafts, and leisure activities? Read how this is achieved at Pôle Molière in Le Havre, France where former stables now function as a part of a modern multipurpose school project, partly clad with weathering steel.
Secondary education with a sustainability focus
Find out more about Gallieni High School and its workshops in Toulouse, France that offer a fine example of steel architecture, in an industrial philosophy, designed in accordance with an environmental approach. In this project, like in many others, steel allows for a high degree of prefabrication, offers wide spans for flexible spaces, and optimises user comfort while saving materials and cost.
Just plane lightness
A more specific form of education takes place at Air Vergiate Flying School in Sesto Calende on Lake Maggiore in Italy where, thanks to their lightness, beams with large web openings brought life back to a sacred place of Italian civil aviation. See where future pilots learn to fly planes in this renovation project case study.

Ateliers 3S - Downtown chic with Granite®

Ateliers 3S create contemporary looks for urban areas with ArcelorMittal organic coated steels. Bacacier is a leading supplier of steel roofing, cladding, and flooring applications for industrial and commercial buildings in France. In 2012, the company created a new entity – Ateliers 3S – to work closely with architects who were building or refurbishing buildings in the centres of cities around Europe. Using organic coated steels from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, Ateliers 3S have developed a range of signature products specifically for the urban environment. One of the latest is the New York® range which allows architects to play with shapes and shades using a ‘toolbox’ of solutions.
Inspired by Phillipe Starck
“The idea for Ateliers 3S came when Jean-Christophe Vigouroux, CEO of the parent company Bacacier, met France’s best-known contemporary designer – Philippe Starck – back in 2011,” explains Julien Faisandier, managing director of Ateliers 3S. “That inspired us to create the Starck® range, the first in the Ateliers 3S portfolio. The range is designed as a toolkit which allows architects to design truly unique projects. It includes an exclusive colour palette, panels in five different designs, and a range of accessories.”
Mix and match approach
From there the Ateliers 3S family grew to include Cadence® and Epure®. Like the Starck® range, these products are based on different steels from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products notes Julien Faisandier: “The exact grade we use depends on the aesthetics required by the customer, and the type of environment where the building is located. We use a lot of Granite® HDS and HDX, particularly in metallic colours.”
The Cadence® range includes 11 profiles with squared standing seams and 11 profiles with triangular seams. The products can be mixed and matched to create a specific design. The finish of these panels can be very tactile thanks to the use of ArcelorMittal products such as Granite® Quartz.”
The Epure® range is a standing seam solution from Ateliers 3S and utilises Granite® Storm from ArcelorMittal. It gives architects four zinc colour options and standing seam panels in four different widths. The colours and widths used on a facade can be mixed to create repeating or random patterns of seams and/or colours.
The latest in the series is New York® which represents a real change for Ateliers 3S. “New York® uses a special folding technique and allows architects to play with shapes and shades,” says Julien Faisandier.
Product consistency and support highly valued
The consistency of ArcelorMittal’s offer is a key consideration for Ateliers 3S notes Julien Faisandier: “When we send a sample to an architect, it can take 18 months for them to place an order. During this period, it is critical that the aesthetics of the steel do not change. ArcelorMittal’s ability to produce consistent products – sometimes years apart – is something we value greatly.”
Throughout the development of the Ateliers 3S family, the company has had a lot of support from ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D teams explains Julien Faisandier: “They provide a wealth of samples and advice at every stage in our development cycle. For example, ArcelorMittal helped with the saline tests we needed to conduct before the products could be placed on the market. We also appreciate the availability of the sales and technical teams, particularly when it comes to testing new steels.”
Floirac project
One recent project undertaken by Ateliers 3S saw the company supply over 20 000 m2 of panels from its Cadence® range. The material was used to clad 17 towers located in Floirac (south-west France) which accommodate 453 housing units. The panels were made from Granite® HDS in three different shades.
The project was jointly designed by TAAD Architectes and MOG Architectes. The architects’ specifications required a material which could insulate each building and give them a more modern and aesthetic appearance. To minimise disruption to residents, the Cadence® panels were fixed to a complex wooden frame in the factory and then attached to the buildings. The use of prefabrication enabled the large project to be completed in just six months.
Like all steel facades, the panels are maintenance-free. Due to the high-end coatings used on the steel, the Cadence® panels are guaranteed to remain beautiful for at least 30 years.
About Ateliers 3S
Ateliers 3S provide cladding applications for architectural projects including new builds and refurbishments. As well as supplying material to major projects, Ateliers 3S also provide solutions to individuals who are extending or refurbishing their existing homes.

ArcelorMittal is continuing to develop its organic coated product offer in three main ways to answer market demands:
1. Durability: Enhancing durability by improving paints, coatings, and edges. For example, all new coatings we develop are thicker than 25 microns to create a long-lasting coating.
2. Aesthetics: ArcelorMittal is offering new aesthetics to architects and designers including new colours, finishes, and textures. We’re also developing alternatives such organic coated steels which mimic the aesthetic of weathering steel, but can be used in extreme environments.
3. Sustainability: ArcelorMittal’s organic coated products meet today’s sustainability criteria, but how will they perform tomorrow? We are constantly monitoring the evolution of standards such as the European Union’s REACH regulation to ensure our products remain sustainable in the future. We’re also developing new high strength steels which require less resources to produce and which enable architects to design lighter and more sustainable structures.

ApplicationDue to their specific purpose and arrangement of space (lecture rooms, large auditoriums, small laboratories, etc.), the construction of such facilities should be as adaptable to the different needs as possible. Large auditoriums with the ability to be split into smaller soundproof rooms is one of our many ideal solutions.
Arcelor Mittal’s solutions take into account the needs of investors, architects, and engineers through some of the following products:
- Our castellated ACB® and Angelina® beams that simplify service integration and avoid the issues related to any additional service zone below the beam level; they also enable the design of vast column-free spaces or various solutions adapted to such kinds of projects.
- Asymmetric beams, like IFB integrated floor beams or SFB slim floor beams, reduce the global thickness of floors.
