XCarb® recycled and renewably produced sheet piles contribute to Sustainable Building Site certificate
On the former Siemens site in Munich, Germany, the new company headquarters of the Bayerische Versorgungskammer (BVK) are being built. Züblin Spezialtiefbau was commissioned with the turnkey construction of the excavation pit, which impresses with its size and depth. A total of 188 300 m3 of soil will be excavated.
A temporary sheet pile wall was installed for the excavation shoring. The contractor chose ArcelorMittal's PU steel sheet pile sections in the company’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced range, which have a very low carbon footprint due to their scrap-based production exclusively using electricity from renewable sources (solar and wind).
The overall project aims for a high level of sustainability and has already been awarded a ‘Sustainable Building Site’ certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
Sustainability and DGNB certification: reuse, recycle
The excavation site was awarded the certification for sustainable construction sites by the German Sustainable Building Council. Besides criteria like extensive noise protection, continued use of demolition materials, or tree protection, the sheet piling solution was an important aspect of the sustainability concept.
First of all, the sheet piles are only rented and are thus transferred back to ArcelorMittal's rental warehouse in Germany after use. Temporarily used sheet piles are used between 5 and 10 times before being fully recycled at the end of their life cycle.
The EcoSheetPile® Plus sheet piles used on site are from ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced range. These sheet piles are manufactured in Luxembourg based on 100% recycled scrap and using 100% electricity from renewable sources. ArcelorMittal started to consistently convert all sheet pile rental stores in Germany to EcoSheetPile™ Plus from Q4 2022 on, but as sheet piles can be reused several times, it will take some time before the changeover is complete.
The use of EcoSheetPile™ Plus sheet piles at the construction site prevented the emission of approximately 1652 tonnes of CO2e in the production of the steel (product stage, modules A1-A3). This corresponds to a reduction of 85% compared with conventionally produced sheet piles. The repeated use in subsequent construction projects has a further positive impact as this avoids the production of new steel, thus saving natural resources and energy (module D).
Execution of the project
The excavation project meets the classic challenges of an inner-city jobsite: residential and commercial buildings in the immediate vicinity, special requirements for dust and noise emissions, and challenging logistics. Since the tunnel of the U4 underground line runs directly along the excavation pit, vibrations and deformations are recorded with a monitoring system.
In January 2023, the first special civil engineering work began, and in March the first PU 28-1 sheet piles were delivered. They are rented from ArcelorMittal and, after temporary use in the excavation pit, they are returned to the rental stock where they are reconditioned and later used for other projects.
The sheet piles have a length between 15 and 22 m and were installed using a vibratory hammer. The total tonnage is close to 800 tonnes, which leads to a considerable sheet pile installation surface of 4850 m². The sheet piles were installed from March to May 2023, before the first waling and anchoring operations were carried out.
In its final state, the sheet pile wall will be partially tied back with steel anchors in up to three layers. The anchor length is also impressive at up to 60 m. Before removal of the steel sheet piles, the anchors must be stress-relieved, and the anchor heads removed at the appropriate time.

Granite® range offers unparalleled sustainability, durability, and aesthetics
ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products has an extensive offer of organic coated steels for roofing and cladding applications. Now Granite® HDX and Granite® HDXtreme are the first organic coated steels to be available with ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced label. And at the end of their life, all Granite® coated steels can be fully recovered and recycled, making them an ideal solution for the circular economy.
Innovative and durable solutions
With sustainability top of the agenda in building and construction, ArcelorMittal’s organic coated offer provides architects, builders, and owners with a full range of innovative and durable solutions. When coupled with ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced label, the carbon footprint of classic organic coated profiles can be reduced by up to 60%. For sandwich panels, the reduction is up to 36%.
“Combining ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewable label with products such as Granite® HDXtreme makes steel building systems both durable and sustainable,” notes André Lavaud, Organic Coating Product Coordinator for ArcelorMittal. “The advantages are very clear when you compare steel to other materials such as concrete and aluminium.”
Maximising energy efficiency
For owners who want to maximise the energy efficiency of their buildings, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products can offer solutions which enhance the reflectivity of roofs and support solar structures. “Enhancing reflectivity is an easy way to reduce the amount of heat a roof absorbs and leads to lower cooling costs for the building,” says Patrick Le Pense, Segment Leader for Building Skins and Civil Engineering at ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. “And it can lead to credits in building sustainability rating systems such as BREEAM and LEED.”
Reflectivity is calculated using the Solar Reflective Index (SRI). This industry standard considers a range of factors including location, the design of the roof, and wind loads to identify the right colour for the roof to maximise reflectivity. As SRI requires a complex set of calculations, ArcelorMittal can perform the calculation to identify the most appropriate roof colour for any building. And with more than 50 colours available for some of its organic coated solutions, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products can provide the most suitable colour.
“Durability of the steel’s aesthetics is almost as important as its corrosion resistance,” notes Patrick Le Pense. “That is why all of ArcelorMittal’s organic coated steels are tested in a variety of real-life conditions around the world. This enables us to confidently guarantee that the paint layers won’t peel or discolour greatly over time.”
High strength solutions available
ArcelorMittal’s Granite® coatings can also be applied to high strength steel (HSS) substrates. “Organic coated HSS products can be thinner and lighter than our regular solutions,” notes André Lavaud. “They can be applied to roofs, facades, and structural elements to offer higher strength and lower weight. The use of HSS also reduces the amount of steel required which can have a positive impact on the building’s overall carbon footprint.”
Long guarantees support solar installations
Many building owners want to install solar installations during construction to reduce the energy use of the building during its use phase. To achieve this, they require roofing materials which can match the typical 25-year life of the solar structure. “Granite® is again one of the best options to meet this requirement,” says Patrick Le Pense. “Some Granite® products come with automatic guarantees of up to 40 years. With minor maintenance, that lifetime can exceed 50 years.”
Environmental Product Declarations
In some European countries, a life cycle analysis (LCA) is mandatory for residential and commercial constructions. The LCA measures the carbon footprint of the building from the production of materials to the building’s end-of-life.
“We are working to complete Environmental Product Declarations for our organic coated steels which take into account the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced label,” says Patrick Le Pense. “The EPDs will give customers all the information they need to calculate the carbon footprint of the building and its LCA. The EPDs for all products that can be purchased with an XCarb® recycled and renewably produced label will be available by the end of 2022. In the interim, ArcelorMittal can provide relevant information to customers for the LCA calculation.”

XCarb® green steel certificates help SCHRAG engage with customers on sustainability
SCHRAG is a leading provider of edge profile solutions for lightweight metal construction. Their high-quality profiles are widely utilised in industrial and commercial construction. In 2021, SCHRAG began to purchase XCarb® green steel certificates with its orders of Magnelis® from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products.
XCarb® green steel certificates as an answer to the growing importance of sustainability in the market
“We became aware of XCarb® green steel certificates during an ArcelorMittal video conference,” says Ingo Kleinau, Hamburg Branch Manager for SCHRAG. “Until now, the topic of sustainability wasn’t a high priority in industrial and commercial construction. But we have seen a change of consciousness in the market, and two of our customers have recently requested more information about ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® initiative.”
Sustainability plays an important role at SCHRAG. The company is particularly concerned with the process of social change towards the efficient and sustainable management of resources. “If you want to do business in a future-oriented way, you must ask yourself how sustainable prosperity works, and how can it be achieved,” says Ingo Kleinau. “For SCHRAG, this means setting an example when it comes to resource conservation. As steel is the basis of 99 percent of our products, it is appropriate that we support sustainable (and preferably CO2-neutral) production.”
Problem solving means offering solutions
Openness and fostering a culture of knowledge are very important at SCHRAG. That openness is one of the reasons the company will make XCarb® green steel certificates available to its customers. Ingo Kleinau explains: “SCHRAG Group always tries to see itself as a problem solver for our customers. We want to be one step ahead of the market so that we can inform our customers about developments at an early stage and offer solutions. With this knowledge, each customer can decide for themselves what advantages the XCarb® green steel certificates bring to their operations.”
SCHRAG will also promote the certificates in its own marketing materials. “In this way we will make it clear to the outside world what SCHRAG is working on, and where we place value and focus,” says Ingo Kleinau.
Working with a global steel manufacturer like ArcelorMittal offers SCHRAG both a supplier and a partner, notes Ingo Kleinau: “It is an advantage to have a supplier who also attaches importance to the further development of steel production and the use of sustainable technology. ArcelorMittal’s experience and global know-how ultimately also enriches the level of knowledge at SCHRAG.”
About SCHRAG
