Mainly, but not limited to, the major environmental benefits of steel include:
- 100% recyclability
- Minimum on-site waste due to high quality shop prefabrication
- Life cycle energy savings due to insulation and air tightness of the envelope
- A long-lasting structure that reduces the need for future building resources (zero depletion of iron resources)
A similar review of progress made in steel buildings demonstrated that:
- Steel construction is efficient, competitive, and makes a significant contribution to society.
- Construction can be quickly assembled using high-quality, nearly defect-free steel components that are efficiently manufactured off-site.
- Steel framing and envelope systems allow, together with other materials, for building design with low overall environmental impacts.
- Steel-based construction systems provide flexible spaces that have the potential to be easily modified and adapted so that the building’s life can be extended by accommodating changes in use, layout, and size.
- At the end of a building's life, steel components can be dismantled, reused, or recycled without degradation of properties.
The efficiency of steel can, therefore, bring new and renovated constructions up to higher standards and improve economic, social, and environmental performances. Steel has all of the attributes required by the 21st century construction sector, and its inherent adaptability makes it an attractive option for an unpredictable and rapidly changing future.

Reducing embodied carbon in logistics developments: the role of low-carbon-emissions steel
The built environment is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, and embodied carbon — the emissions generated during the production and construction of materials — poses a significant and ongoing challenge for the property sector. In logistics developments, where structural steel is fundamental, reducing these emissions is crucial to achieving sustainability and meeting net-zero targets. This agreement provides Stockland, one of Australia’s largest diversified property companies, with the necessary commercial and logistical support to make these projects a reality.
Structural steel has traditionally been manufactured using the blast furnace steelmaking process. While this method has been refined over the centuries, it still relies on coal as an iron ore reductant, making it a significant source of carbon emissions. Innovations in steel production are reshaping the industry. XCarb® products are low-carbon-emissions steel produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF). They contain up to 100% recycled scrap and use 100% renewable electricity for the EAF smelting process. This is backed by Guarantees of Origin in Europe and I-RECs (International Renewable Energy Certificates) for the rest of the world. Compared with steel produced using the traditional blast furnace method, XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel delivers embodied carbon savings of around 87%.
Decarbonising construction: from intent to impact
Olivier Vassart, CEO of ArcelorMittal Steligence®, said: “As a company providing material to the construction market, we have a responsibility to reduce the impact of the built environment on global carbon emissions. Using our range of XCarb® low carbon-emissions steel in combination with best practices in design can easily enable developers to halve the carbon footprint of a building, compared with today’s benchmark.”
Pete Bounsall, Stockland's General Manager - Strategic Supply Chain, sees an opportunity for the organisation to adopt low-carbon-emissions materials such as XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel: “Adopting low carbon-emissions materials like XCarb® steel will allow us to reduce embodied carbon and build a more sustainable future for our industrial real estate assets. Our partnership allows us to optimise design and source more sustainable options. This is an important part of our approach to achieving our decarbonisation targets, and it’s the reason we’re looking at incorporating more sustainable products such as XCarb® steel across our portfolio.”
“Achieving meaningful reductions in embodied carbon requires close alignment between material innovation, design, and supply chain execution. As the supply chain enablers, our job is to make sure we move beyond Intent and deliver at scale our solutions like XCarb® low carbon-emissions steel ensuring seamless integration into projects,” explained Prateik Aggarwal, Head of ArcelorMittal International Singapore.
Raising the bar for low carbon logistics development
XCarb® steel is being used in Stockland’s new flagship, multi-storey logistics development, Momenta, which is located in the Sydney suburb of Banksmeadow.
Construction of the two-storey logistics facility, which will span over 15 000 square metres, commenced in late 2024. It will embody sustainability excellence, featuring XCarb® steel beams as well as water harvesting, solar energy, smart lighting and biophilic landscape design. The building is on track to achieve a 36% reduction in embodied carbon and is targeting a 5-Star rating under the Green Star Buildings v1 rating system.
