Coated steel from the XCarb® range, which is made from recycled materials and produced using renewable energy, played a significant role in the construction of the MDC² Park Kraków South complex. This project demonstrates how modern materials can support the development of sustainable logistics.

MDC²: sustainable warehouse property developers

MDC² specialises in the development of modern warehouse and industrial facilities. The company carries out development projects, managing the construction process and letting out space. MDC² consistently delivers eco-friendly buildings across Poland. Their logistics centres are a key element in the commercial property sector's transition towards sustainable development.

One such facility is MDC² Park Kraków South, a transhipment terminal for a leading courier service provider. Located in Skawina, Poland, the 11 000 m² development plays a significant role in the regional logistics system.

Low-carbon-emission steel solutions in practice

For this project, ArcelorMittal Building Solutions supplied Hacierco® roof decking with an underside made from Estetic® organic coated steel from the low-carbon-emissions XCarb® range.

XCarb® products are manufactured in electric arc furnaces using renewable energy and a high proportion of recycled steel. This approach significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions throughout the entire production process, and the solutions offered support partners in delivering environmentally responsible projects.

BREEAM certification at the highest level

The use of sustainable material solutions had a direct impact on the facility achieving the prestigious Outstanding rating in the BREEAM New Construction certification scheme. This is the highest rating in the BREEAM system and is awarded to buildings that meet the most rigorous criteria for sustainable construction.

Only projects scoring over 85% belong to this select group of the highest-rated buildings. MDC² Park Kraków South's certification confirms its technological advancement, high energy efficiency, and tangible contribution to environmental protection.

Measurable environmental benefits thanks to the use of XCarb® steel

The use of Hacierco® structural roofing sheets with an Estetic® coating made from XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel has enabled:

• a 68% reduction in CO₂e emissions during the production stage compared with traditional steel
• a reduction in the embedded carbon footprint of over 200 000 kg CO₂e across the entire project

The steel sheets were profiled locally by ArcelorMittal Building Solutions. The main contractor for the project was BREMER.

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel - Park Krakow South Complex (Project)

ArcelorMittal is strengthening its partnership with Vestas through the supply of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates for Vattenfall’s new Clashindarroch II onshore wind farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Developed close to the existing Clashindarroch site, the new wind farm will comprise 14 turbines with a total installed capacity of up to 63 MW, enough to deliver clean electricity to around 61 000 UK households each year.

Driving wind energy forward with XCarb® steel

ArcelorMittal's heavy plates will play a key role in the project. All 14 towers of the wind farm will be manufactured using ArcelorMittal's low carbon emissions heavy plates. As part of our commitment to low carbon steelmaking, ArcelorMittal will supply almost 4Kt of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates, based on slabs made with a minimum of 95% high quality scrap and 100% renewable electricity. They have a 66% lower carbon footprint than heavy plates made via the conventional blast furnace route, helping wind developers lower the embedded emissions of their assets from the outset.

Raising the bar for sustainable energy infrastructure

Clashindarroch II is the first onshore wind project to incorporate a significant volume of low carbon emissions steel. It reflects ArcelorMittal’s broader ambition to decarbonise value chains and support the expansion of renewable energy. By combining advanced steel expertise with a clear pathway to lower emissions, we are helping to deliver the infrastructure required for a fossil-free future.

Preparatory works began in autumn 2025, and the main construction phase will follow in spring 2026. The first power is targeted for summer 2027.

A smarter material choice for a lower-impact build thanks to XCarb®

Rockfon has partnered with ArcelorMittal to produce a low-carbon version of its leading T24 2890 grid for suspended ceilings. 

Using ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, Rockfon has created a ceiling grid with over 50% less embodied carbon than the standard version, without compromising on performance. With all components made from lower-emissions steel, including the main runners, cross tees, and wall angles, the Chicago Metallic® T24 Click 2890 LowCarbon grid sets a new standard for the industry.

Architects and specifiers can now enjoy industry-leading load-bearing capacity and fire safety while significantly reducing the environmental impact of the ceiling. Through the partnership with ArcelorMittal, the grid also features an improved matt white painted surface, which means that the grid can be combined with Rockfon’s range of white tiles to create a seamless aesthetic. 

No compromise on quality. No change to the design process. Just a smarter material choice for a lower-impact build.
